I grew up in Thousand Oaks, Ca. I went to school for physical therapy and on the side worked for a buddy of mine who had a print shop about 15 years ago. He needed some help and I offered to help him get the shop going for about 2-3 years. From there I fell into the offset printing industry, working for a couple different big companies doing production coordinating. I later went to work for a shop that had a large format printer who made billboard prints. At the time there were only low res prints being made and very few if any at all, vehicle wraps being made.
I thought it would be cool to do more custom work with the printing but at that time no one was really interested in the “high end” stuff.
As technology progressed and new printer’s with higher resolution capabilities came out, I jumped on the opportunity and opened up my own shop [Spin Imaging] about 6 ½ years ago. My shop pretty much took off right away, as there was a new high demand for custom work. My first client was Dub Magazine, working with Myles Kovacs. We used to work together at a place called World Wide Prints, and pretty much since day one when he started Dub Magazine has been a client of mine and still is.
We are also very involved in the action sports industry. We started out with Dub Magazine and the car scene, but met a few friends of mine that were in the action sports industry and moved into that. We do a lot of the tradeshow printing, art prints. The more work we did the more work we got and it just grew from there. This is my comfort zone. I do a lot of work with friends, and it works.
I’d really like to grow but stay niche and I still want to work with friends. Doing a lot of the fun crazy projects, like with Virgin Galactic, Mattel Hot Wheels, Kawasaki, and Toyota Scion. I’d really like to stay in that area and just grow within corporate. We do pretty much only corporate work, and that’s kind of where I want to stay. They know what they want and it’s a good flow for us. There is a market for the general public, but with so much involvement required we, at the moment, don’t fit that market. We’re a little spoiled because we get the opportunity to only deal with corporate. It’s a great place to be for us.
We’re still a small crew here at Spin Imaging, and we have it pretty good. We produce a large amount of work for the crew that we are and each one of us is a key player. If one of us is lacking we all feel it, so I try and stoke these guys out with their work. Allen who’s the printer, is also into cars, so he really digs doing all the car work. Dave’s into skateboarding so we built a mini ramp for him, just to blow off some steam every once in a while. They are all pretty happy here, which is part of my philosophy of, if the employee’s are happy, the clients are happy. Some people don’t get this but we definitely get it, and try and have everyone relaxed and stoked on their work. We try and make a cool atmosphere here, like having BBQ’s, grilling some carne asada on Fridays and keep the morale up.Special Thanks:
